Tim Surface Conquers Inaugural Ironman!
Congratulations to Tim Surface for conquering what's being touted as possibly the most brutal IM course in the world! On Sunday, May 2nd, Tim competed as a pro in the inaugural Ford Ironman race in St. George, UT. The race start was unusually chilly for the 2,100 athletes who participated in the race. To top it off, the swim in the Sand Hollow Reservoir was cold as well, with the water temp reported at 55 degrees. Though the sun came out for the bike to take the edge off the air temperature, Tim said he struggled after the cold swim to regain feeling in his toes or fingers until about 3 hours into the bike. (When the bike is filled with canyon climbs and windy conditions, it sure helps to have sensation in your extremities!)
Tim endured the tough day to finish 42nd overall with a time of 10:14:40. His splits were: 1:05:22 (swim) / 5:34:29 (bike) / 3:28:05 (run). Though he didn't have the race he'd hoped for, Tim was happy to have just finished given the conditions and high number of DNFs. Word on the street is St. George had the 2nd highest drop-out rate ever tallied for a North America IM.
We continue to be impressed, Tim! (And, If you don't know why, check out Endurance Magazine's May article on Tim at: http://www.endurancemag.com/issues).
